Good day all. I’m sure some people are wondering what happened to this storm we’ve all been hearing about. Well it does appear to have done two small things to make it be a little less potent over the area.
First it ended up further west, so the area of snow that has lingered has mostly been over the west coast. Secondly, there have been a few more breaks in there for central and the southeast than were originally suggested. So while it was originally looking like a persistent long duration snowfall, there have been some breaks, and in some areas the early snowfall didn’t accumulate very much (or at all). Either way, it’s still a long duration event, just not continuously snowing for some areas, and that makes all the difference between 20 to 30 cm over several days instead of 30 to 60+ cm. You just have to lookup some pictures of Nova Scotia right now to know that there was potential for a significant event. It was a tough one to warn folks about. Essentially: watch out there’s a long period of… “almost something” coming.
Having said that, it’s still gonna cause us some grief. We have multiple special weather statement in effect and one winter storm warning for the southwest. Find all the details here. The biggest question left is whether we will need some blowing snow advisories (or maybe even some winter storm warnings) for the colder areas in the west / central / northeast, or whether the tricky stuff tonight on the Avalon will reach some kind of warning criteria.
